About Urban Island Home
Urban Island Home is about creating unique homewares and prints. Items that are beautiful and sometimes practical too. I initially create something I’d like for my own home, that I can’t find in any shop and then I hope that you might like it too…… There is no strict medium I adhere too, but I incorporate elements of nature into the pieces. The wood prints on actual wood provide a REAL grain finish. The house numbers with oxides, sand and aggregate create a stone like finish. The rust and metal patina finishes on the plaques have an earthy feel … I love finishes that look like stone, sandstone, metal or rust. I live in Sydney and make these items in my workshop. I am inspired by Sydney and its contrasts from the inner city, the suburbs, urban life and the wonderful beaches.
About Anita Renelt
I grew up in Newport on the Northern Beaches, travelled, adventured and somehow ended up living back in Newport. I have a Certificate in Fine Arts, Associate Diploma in Graphic Design and have studied artistic welding, sculpture and photography. I work in graphic design but am more interested in creating things.
About the process
For the house number and plaques I do some pencil sketches, then use modelling clay and rough out a design. The process is quite lengthy. I use modelling clay to make a BAS relief sculpture or 3D number. Once I am happy with the modelled clay I make a silicone mould of it. Then I pour resin into the mould to create a piece. The resin needs to cure, be sanded back to expose the sand or aggregate and sealed. The plaques are painted with either an actual rust paint, metal and oxide patinas, or sealed in their cast state. Some of these finishes need several days reaction time.
The photographs are all taken by me. I go looking for something interesting while the sun is rising or setting. I like sillohettes thus I like the sun low in the sky. I use the computer to alter the images, to change and draw over the photographs, to resize elements and make the original photo look like a graphic design and not like a photo. Things that inspire me presently are Hawaiin style fabrics, tropical plants, beach life, but mostly people doing fun things.
